Our Business

Quality seafood products for all South Africans

Established in 2010, Khanyisile Fishing has grown exponentially as we continue to expand our factory and product ranges.

Our factory uses the latest specialist machinery to design, formulate, value-add and pack all our products in bulk or into exclusive private label brands.

Our speciality products include crumbed and battered fish fillets, fish cakes, crispy bakes and a South African favourite, fish fingers. Our products can be found in delis, restaurants, butcheries, retailers and wholesale outlets.

We proudly differentiate ourselves by servicing the unique and exclusive requirements of our customers. We are able to specifically formulate recipes to meet each client’s requirements.

We keep investing in our business

We are committed to continually investing in our specialist factory and hi-tech machinery. A recent investment of over R50 million will enhance our production capabilities to ensure we supply only the best crumbed and coated seafood.

As one of the three largest specialised factories in a highly capital-intensive industry, Khanyisile Fishing embarked on commercial fishing investment in 2019 by investing in a Hake Trawler. In 2021 we made a further investment in a Small Pelagic and Hake Longline Vessel, demonstrating our commitment to the South African fishing industry.

Our business and our community rely strongly on fishing quotas

Khanyisile Fishing relies on internationally procured seafood products to keep our production line operating optimally. We are committed to growing our investment in commercial fishing through the potential of being allocated quota in the upcoming fishing rights allocation process (FRAP) in 2021.

Having access to more local seafood resources would allow us to meet the local demand for crumbed and coated seafood products as well as diversify and grow our product range.

Fishing quota would drive much-needed employment to the disadvantaged community of Atlantis and the surrounding areas, improving the lives of our beneficiaries for at least the duration of the fishing rights. We believe increased fishing quota to our business has the potential to give the young generation of Atlantis hope for a better future.

Our Products

Khanyisile Fishing produces an assortment of quality crumbed and coated fish products. We use only the finest raw material to ensure our crumbed and coated products are top quality. Our range is distributed to South African retailers, wholesale markets, restaurants and other food services.  Our products are specially packed for the private labels of South Africa’s top retailers or bulk packed for distribution to foodservice and wholesale markets nationally and internationally.

One of the key ways in which we distinguish our business is that we conform to highly controlled standards for specialised Kosher products exported to the USA, EU and Israel. It has taken six years of commitment to accomplish these standards and we wish to continue growing this market.

Our food safety standards certification includes HACCP, EU accreditation, IFS (International Featured Standards), Halaal, Kosher, MSC (Chain of custody), OHS and the Spanish retail Decalogue food safety criteria.

Our crumbed range includes household favourites like fish fingers, fish cakes, fish sticks and fish nuggets. We also produce hake fillets and portions, a range of hake products coated in a variety of batters or crumbs, as well as kingklip fillets and portions.

Our battered products include hake fillet portions, hake AA portions, fish fillet portions, hake nuggets and natural hake fillet or natural shaped hake fillet.

Our Community

We empower our people

The Khanyisile Fishing Employee Empowerment Trust, consisting of over 100 historically disadvantaged employees, bought Khanyisile Fishing in 2019. Since then, these beneficiaries, the majority of whom are women, directly benefit and participate in the company’s successes. The company is 100% black owned; 87% of these owners are black women from Atlantis and surrounds.. We prioritise employing women who are often single mothers and the sole bread winners for their extended families.

South Africa has an alarming high youth unemployment rate that contributes to a sense of hopelessness among young people, especially in disadvantaged areas like Atlantis. By ensuring that we employ a high number of young people, Khanyisile Fishing aims to improve the lives of the youth in our area. Currently 73% of our staff are under the age of 35.

The sale of Khanyisile Fishing to the Trust in 2019 constituted a ground-breaking broad-based deal that directly contributes to the economic development and upliftment of the local economy of Atlantis, improving the lives of our staff and their families.

Our Corporate Social Investment Policy: Supporting the women and children of Atlantis

Khanyisile Fishing is based in Atlantis, a disadvantaged community 45km outside of Cape Town that suffers greatly from the effects of rampant unemployment and poverty. The area is poorly resourced with little infrastructure and few job opportunities.  Women, children and vulnerable people in the Atlantis community are particularly susceptible to abuse and gender-based violence.

As a company, Khanyisile Fishing is focused on uplifting and empowering the people of Atlantis, especially the most vulnerable. We employ mostly women from the community to work in our factory, many of whom are the only breadwinners in their extended families. We are committed to supporting our staff with regular clinics, and HIV/Aids and Covid-19 awareness workshops.

In the Atlantis community we support organisations that assist vulnerable women and children. Our corporate social investment focuses on organisations that provide clinics and health care, day care centres for children and safe havens for abused women and children.

We support Emmanuel Day Care Centre where they look after 72 children with various disabilities. Our recent donation included an industrial catering oven valued at over R14 500, R10 000 in cash and frozen hake fillets valued at R47 550 which will provide each child in their care with three meals a day for one year.

The United Sanctuary Against Abuse is another local organisation we are proud to support. This shelter provides counselling and coaching to abused woman and children from Atlantis – an area plagued by a high rate of domestic violence. Our recent donation of frozen hake fillets helps to provide daily meals for the victims and their children.

Our aim is to create a better world for the people of this community to thrive and fulfil their potential.
