Nokuthula Khobeni

Nokuthula has been working at Khanyisile Fishing for a few years now and speaks very fondly about her job. Although originally hired as cleaner, her hard work saw her promoted to COVID marshal in conjunction with her existing responsibilities following the onset of the pandemic in 2020. This means that it’s also up to her to train the other cleaning staff to clean as per government standards and COVID regulations, as well as conduct health screenings for staff members when they arrive at the factory each morning.

“I enjoy working at Khanyisile Fishing. I really love my job,” she says.

Originally from the Eastern Cape, Nokuthula comes from a big family of seven children and has two daughters of her own, aged nine and 14, both of whom stay with her in Atlantis. She is the primary breadwinner for her household and claims that her older daughter is a massive pillar of strength for her, taking on the responsibility of caring for her younger sister when mom is at work.

Nokuthula means ‘kindness’, and it’s easy to see that this lovely woman was aptly named! Along with being open and kind, Nokuthula is also extremely ambitious, with dreams of starting her own business one day. She’s already flexing her entrepreneurial muscles by selling clothing to other members of the community in her spare time. She also recently took the plunge and sat for the test to get her learner’s driving licence – and passed with flying colours!

It will be interesting to see where else her career takes her in the coming months and years, especially considering how proud she is of her work and her company.

“I’m proud of my factory when I see our products in the shops! This is my work. This is from my company.”
